![]() ![]() ![]() With two talented reporting partners, we began working on a data-driven journalistic endeavor called The Knows, which will implement these tools in the near future. Thankfully, that's also how I met my current reporting partner, which made it all worthwhile.Īfter relocating to Los Angeles and being cut off from my former employer, I started the #LearnToCode phase of my career to develop new tools for news-gathering and reporting. More on that soon.Īs Chief Content Officer, I trained and managed a great little team, learned some hard lessons, and put some good work together under the SCNR brand. Taking the job was the kind of early-twenties mistake that really shapes your principles, values, priorities, and career path. In 2019, I was asked - for a third time - to start a digital news company called Subverse, with what turned out to be two deeply dishonest people who cared more about their own respective companies than journalism. Internationally, I covered the Catalan Independence Movement in Spain, the Yellow Vest Movement in France, the Pro-Democracy Movement in Hong Kong, the refugee crisis in Greece, and more. Traveling from coast to coast, I reported on various groups, including the alt-right and other far-right extremists, the Black Lives Matter movement and the anti-fascist movement. Spending time in these lines gave me insight into the priorities and media habits of Americans that I never would've learned from the press pit.Īfter the election, I continued working as a freelance reporter, producer, and videographer to fund the expansion of my coverage into what really interested me: social movements. Undeterred, I decided to stand in line for several hours to get in and photograph the candidates and their supporters. In the early months of the primary elections, I was unable to get credentials as a freelancer. In addition to reporting on civil unrest and chasing tornadoes, I produced Midwest-based breaking news and cultural features.Īs the 2016 Presidential Election kicked off, I dropped out of college to follow the candidates around the country. One of my first assignments was the protests in Ferguson, Missouri after Michael Brown was killed by a police officer. This helped me learn about how systemic racism and violence manifest in those communities, and how the media often strips the human element out of their coverage of the subject.īefore long, I began freelancing as a reporter, including for one of the largest global wire services, Xinhua News Agency (I learned some lessons the hard way), where I learned various newsroom roles. With a few independent night-crawlers, I had the opportunity to film and shadow local community organizers helping neighborhoods hit hardest by gang and gun violence. When I was 19, I wanted to better understand the epidemic of violence on the South and West Sides of Chicago, far from the Northwest Suburbs where I grew up reading body-count headlines. As an independent journalist, my visual work has been featured in publications like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Intercept, BuzzFeed News, and ProPublica, as well as global news broadcasts, documentaries, and feature films. ![]()
